White Ink Printing

White Ink Printing at Smartpress.com

Smartpress.com offers white ink printing on a variety of substrates, including colored stock, kraft paper and clear vinyl decals. White ink can be printed as the solitary color in the design, or it could be combined with full color printing, with white as a fifth color in the CMYK process.

We use HP ElectroInk White with our HP Indigo press to achieve white ink printing. HP ElectroInk is the first white ink developed specifically for digital printing presses and the results are truly stunning. It can be used along with the full color CMYK process to fill design elements; it can be the only color in a design; and it can be applied to color stock to form a white canvas on top of which other full color designs can be printed.

High-quality white ink printing hasn’t always been available. Traditional white inks have required multiple passes and extended drying times to get the desired results. Smartpress.com's digital white ink is semi-opaque. Results vary depending on the paper stock and white ink may not be completely opaque. It dries almost immediately, decreasing the time it takes to finish orders.

Below are file setup instructions for Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. If you are unable to setup your file for white ink printing, your customer service pre-press representative will set it up for you. If your design features an extensive amount of white, additional charges may apply. If you can only supply a raster file (i.e. JPEG, TIF or PSD file), or your file contains a raster image in your PDF, additional charges may apply. After you place your order your CSR will let you know if any additional charges may apply before you receive your proof. Charges will be prorated at $85/hour.

White Ink Printing File Setup in Adobe InDesign

It takes just a few extra steps to set up a file for printing with white ink.

  1. In Adobe InDesign, create a new layer that will contain the white portions of your design. This layer should be named “White.” The software we use to print is case sensitive, so make sure the W is capitalized.
  2. Once this layer is in place, create a new color swatch. Start by clicking on “Window,” then “Color,” then “Swatches.” The Swatch Palette will appear.
  3. Click in the upper right hand corner of the Swatch Palette and select “Add New Color.” It will default to black, but we suggest that you make the color light blue so you can see the white better; 20% Cyan works.
  4. Use the Color Type drop-down menu to select “Spot.” Change the Swatch Name to “White,” with the W capitalized. Click “OK.”
  5. On the White layer, with the White color, fill in the objects that you would like to have colored white or, if you want white to be printed behind a design element, trace the shape you will need.
  6. Click “Window,” then “Output,” then “Attributes.” Put a check in the box next to Overprint Fill and Overprint Stroke (if applicable).
  7. When you save your file, the “White” layer should be at the top, with all of the rest of the artwork behind it.

Your file should now be ready for submission.
