Foil book covers

All Fact, No Fiction

As a premium online printer, we’re constantly expanding our specialty offerings, and foil booklet printing is just the latest in a long line of products that become favorites for our customers. With Foil Perfect Bound Booklets, custom foil printing is now available on the front and back cover.

And if you’re worried about the foil rubbing off or cracking from the frequent handling of booklets, fear not. Our digital Sleeking™ process is the best of the best. Unlike foil-stamped book covers, ours continue to shine since Sleeking ensures the foil adheres to the printed ink, not just the paper.

Still not convinced? Our custom book covers are printed with Soft Touch laminate for extra protection and an unexpectedly luxurious feel. Whether you’re accenting your cover with bold text or going for a full flood, that foil stays put and stays impressive.

Hint: Wondering why a perfect binding is ideal for foiled book covers and a saddle stitched one isn’t? We don’t recommend foil on saddle stitch booklets because the production process could cause scratching on the foil.

Time the Shine

Now that you know what we can do, let’s figure out when to do it. The reasons to print a perfect bound book are plenty, but it’s an especially good idea when your goal is a sophisticated presentation. With its seamless square spine, it’s the epitome of modern professionalism and is a must anywhere you want to wow.

Think campaign lookbooks with curated collections, graphic novels with vibrant colors, photography portfolios with speaks-for-itself imagery. Completely customizable, a perfect binding also makes practical look professional. We’re talking educational workbooks, seasonal catalogs and employee manuals.

Then comes the fun part: choosing your foil color. While each booklet can only feature one foil color, with our superior online printing services, you have multiple options:

  • Gold: Warm, glinting yellow gold
  • Rose Gold: Soft pink-copper
  • Silver: Clean, sharp silver
  • Holographic: Also known as unicorn, appears iridescent with soft, watercolor shades of the rainbow
  • Clear Spot Gloss: Also known as spot varnish, the clear material highlights the color that’s printed underneath it

How to Print with Foil

Before you get your booklet ready for online printing with Smartpress, check out these insider tips for how to print with foil. From our expert Creative team, they’re sure to boost your ROI, whether profitable or personal:

  • Use foil to highlight and complement your brand or logo. Consider the foil color an extension of your brand – a premium specialty finish that’s added to your design language.
  • Incorporate a flood or blocks of foil on the back cover of your booklet to create interest. Then use foil minimally on the front cover to build front-to-back contrast.
  • Create a foil frame or border around your images.
  • Use foil as another dimension beyond just the paper stock and ink. Foil incorporates another texture and adds an extra element to emphasize design details.
  • For foil words, numbers or lettering, we recommend a font size of 14 or higher.
  • We do not recommend foil on the spine of your booklet.
  • Don’t want any margins on your design? No problem – we can do a full bleed of foil, too.
