What are Poly Mailers?

Poly mailer bags are one of those business essentials you want to have stocked at all times. And because they can be stored flat, stocking takes up less space than other custom packaging like tuck boxes or corrugated boxes.

Poly mailers are a popular choice for e-commerce shipping, and it’s easy to see why. They’re lightweight and easy to ship, while also giving you a blank canvas for business logos and branded colors and messaging. It’s convenience mixed with content.

Poly Mailers for Clothes, Retail & Gifts

So what do you pop into poly mailer bags? You can use poly mailers for clothes (think T-shirts, socks, beanies, etc.), home textiles like towels and bedding, retail products and even gifts. The key is to ensure these items are soft goods. Basically anything that can’t be easily crushed – they are bags, after all.

(Hint: If you are shipping hard or delicate products, simply surround them with bubble wrap before slipping them into your shipping bag.)

Poly Mailer Sizes

When you print with Smartpress, you get to choose from various sizes of poly bags that are flat or gusseted to accommodate any product. To print and ship as efficiently as possible, the poly mailer size you choose really does matter. As such, Smartpress offers small, medium and large options:

  • Small: Great for socks, beanies, jewelry.
    • 6” x 9” (flat)
    • 9.5” x 12” (flat)
    • 9.5” x 12” x 3” (gusseted)
  • Medium: Great for T-shirts and other apparel items.
    • 14.25” x 12” (flat)
    • 14.25” x 11.5” x 4” (gusseted)
  • Large: Great for heavier textiles or multiple clothing items.
    • 19” x 13.5” (flat)
    • 19” x 11.5” x 4” (gusseted)

Whether you need big poly mailers or small ones, size plays a part in the overall presentation of your product shipment (and makes an impression on your customer), so choose wisely.

What are Poly Mailers made of?

At Smartpress, we love giving customers and clients choices, and that includes poly mailer material. When we say custom poly mailers, we truly mean every part of them, so we offer both standard and compostable options.

Standard Poly Mailers

Made from polyethylene, standard poly mailers feature high-grade material that’s thicker and more durable than our competitors’:

  • Solid white
  • Thickness: 2.6 mil
  • Tear-proof and water/weather-resistant
  • High elasticity and puncture-resistant
  • Peel-and-seal adhesive
  • Store in a cool, dry area out of direct sunlight

Compostable Poly Mailers

As a sustainable printer, of course we offer eco friendly poly mailers. Also made from high-grade material that’s thicker and more durable than our competitors’, our compostable poly mailers let your customers know exactly what your business’ values are.

  • Solid white
  • Thickness: 2.0 mil
  • Independently tested to TUV standards for home compostability
  • Tear-proof and water/weather-resistant
  • High elasticity and puncture-resistant
  • Peel-and-seal adhesive (Note: Adhesive is not compostable. Prior to composting, remove the perforated adhesive strip.)
  • Store in a cool, dry area out of direct sunlight

What do you print on Poly Mailers?

When it comes to branding, poly mailers make it easy. Whether you’re doing a short run or need poly mailers in bulk, Smartpress keeps your branded messaging in the spotlight. And we do it all with full-color digital printing and full bleed.

So what does that mean for you? It means you get to print bag designs with a vibrant and wide array of colors. And with full bleed, those designs can go all the way to the edges of your bag – including on the flap! Hello, design freedom.

With poly bags printing like ours, you can also add your brand colors, logos and messaging to both sides for even more visibility and an even better presentation.

Design Tips

Your poly mailer design can greatly impact your ROI, so it’s important to consider the colors, patterns, logos and messaging you print on your bags. Whether you’re a graphic designer or have a whole team of them, these tips will ensure your poly mailer printing goes smoothly.

  1. Full-bleed printing means you’re free from design constraints, but there are still elements to think about:
    • We recommend: Solid-colored backgrounds, symmetrical gradients and symmetrical patterns.
    • We do not recommend: Asymmetrical backgrounds, asymmetrical gradients and asymmetrical patterns.
  2. You have complete control over your artwork and how it will look as a finished piece, so be sure to lock in where cut lines will fall on your pattern and scale it accordingly.
  3. Keep in mind where the flap lands in your design, and be sure it won’t cut off or cover up an important element, like the logo.

Shipping Poly Mailers

While shipping poly bags with your products is easy, there are a few mailing tips you should follow.

  1. Your mailing label does not have to be placed in a designated area, but most people put it somewhere in the middle of the bag.
  2. You won’t see a space for your label in our poly mailers template. Just design a blank space for it in your artwork.
  3. We recommend using poly mailers for shipping items under 10 pounds.
  4. Most carriers can ship poly mailer bags for you.
