Raised Foil Printing: Texture, Shine, Serious Standout Power
The problem facing most marketing teams is how to get your assets to stand out. One way to dominate? Our newest specialty finish: raised foil printing. It’s texture, it’s shine, it’s a sprinkle of marketing magic.
Whether on campaign essentials like brochures and postcards or branded stationery like cards and invites, raised foil takes your messaging from flat to unforgettable.
Key Takeaways
- Combining texture and shine, raised foil elevates brand perception, grabs attention and makes your marketing instantly more memorable.
- From brochures and postcards to business cards, folders and branded stationery, raised foil adds polish to a breadth of print marketing materials.
- Stick with bold elements, simple accents and intentional placement. Avoid overly intricate designs or full-coverage foil to keep everything crisp and impactful.

What is Raised Foil Printing?
With its tactile texture and glittering shine, raised foil puts the special in specialty finish. Unlike foil stamping, where the foil is simply pressed onto the paper, raised foil lays over the top of your print design. The result? A 3D-like texture that’s much more memorable to your customers and a sophisticated shine that garners all the attention.
Why Raised Foil is a Marketing Power Move
So, why do you want to utilize foil printing on your marketing materials? One look at it, and the answer’s obvious: to set yourself apart. Marketing is all about differentiating yourself in an ever-crowded market, whether it’s business branding, product promotion or event advertising.
Raised foil does that and more:
- Sensory appeal: The raised texture combined with metallic shine creates a high-end feel that activates both sight and touch.
- Elevated brand perception: Branding reflects your business, and a luxe finish like this says you’re premium, professional and pay attention to detail.
- See and be seen: The foil’s lustrous appearance is an eye-catcher, ensuring your marketing materials stick out among the clutter.
Put Raised Foil to Work
You want to be strategic about your print marketing pieces and the placement of your raised foil on them. And that’s the great thing about custom foil printing: You get to decide how and where to add it.
Get your details to dazzle with a raised foil logo on business cards, make a classy impression with accented designs on foil brochures or connect customers to promos with foil printed postcards.
Give your brand the spotlight with a glittering logo at the center of foil printed pocket folders or earn all the eye-catching attention with foil shining across rack cards in reception areas with high foot traffic.
Stationery that Speaks Volumes
Marketing extends beyond product advertisements, of course, so foil print extends to other branded assets, too. With its tangible elegance, raised foil gives your stationery a literal step up.
Create connections that leap off the paper with foil cards or send well wishes to employees and clients with custom foil greeting cards. Design foil invitations to spark event excitement and make package inserts effortlessly interesting with foiled bookmarks that tell your brand story.
Raised foil is just one of the ways we excel at custom printing. Here are six more.

Customize Your Shine
When you design and print your raised foil designs with Smartpress, you get flexible options that suit your branding, messaging and whatever creative whims you might have. The most important one? Foil color, of course.
Opt for classic gold foil print or silver foil printing, both offered with a matte or gloss finish, or be a bit bolder with blue, green, red or holographic hues.
Choose your own sizes, coated paper stocks, double-sided printing, even rounded corners. Then add our velvety-smooth Soft Touch laminate for one more sensory element.
Hint: If you plan to write anything on your print pieces, choose coated semigloss 1 side (C1S) paper stock. Stick to Soft Touch on only one side, as well – it doesn’t play well with writing utensils.
Do’s & Don’ts of Raised Foil Design
Before you embark on your own raised foil printing, there are things you should know – do’s and don’ts, if you will. Here’s what we recommend:
Do design raised foil with:
- A bold logo or large typography. Use it to draw the viewer’s eye to certain elements on your print piece.
- A simple pattern is a great way to create an accent with raised foil. Choose a pattern that isn’t too intricate so the shine really gets the spotlight (thick, bold elements work best).
- Raised foil can also be used to accent an image. Choose a part of the image that shows something shiny to get the best effect (metal, tire rims, jewelry, even sunglasses).
Don’t design raised foil with:
- Super small typography or a highly intricate logo. Raised foil can fill in the small counters of letters, which can affect their legibility. Highly wrought patterns are also prone to filling in and can look messy.
- A full flood of raised foil. If you’d like a full flood of shine over your entire design, we recommend simply adding a gloss laminate or high gloss coating.
Want the texture without the foil? Raised UV has you covered.
