You\u2019ve designed <a href=\"https:\/\/smartpress.com\/shop\/direct-mail-printing\">custom mailers<\/a> for online printing and had them sent out to <a href=\"https:\/\/smartpress.com\/support\/direct-mail\/know-your-mailing-audience\">target audiences<\/a> and your <a href=\"https:\/\/smartpress.com\/support\/direct-mail\/list-processing\">distribution lists<\/a>. A few days pass and suddenly you start receiving return mail of your own mailer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what happened? If you\u2019re wondering why you\u2019re getting returned mailers, you\u2019re not alone. On average, about 10% of every mailer is returned. Check out the most common USPS return mail reasons and how to reduce address-related delivery issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"waypoint t-sink s-sink\" id=\"return-mail-labels\">\n    \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Read and Understand USPS Return Mail Labels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First, it\u2019s important to point out that only First Class mail with a return address can be sent back to you. And in mailing terms, each one of those lines has a specific meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"waypoint t-sink s-sink\" id=\"return-to-sender\">\n    \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What \u201cReturn to Sender\u201d Means on a USPS Label<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On any yellow label like the one above, the first line lets you know this piece isn\u2019t intended for you and the possible outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this example, Return to Sender means send the piece to the return address on it, if available. Another example is Return to Postmaster. The postmaster will then decide if it&#8217;s possible to find the owner, to return the piece to a mailing agent or dispose of it.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"waypoint t-sink s-sink\" id=\"not-deliverable-as-addressed\">\n    \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common USPS Reasons for Why Mail is \u201cNot Deliverable as Addressed\u201d <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The second line on the label will provide the main reason your mail has been returned. There are several possible messages that can appear here, but the post office will list the most relevant. Some common messages are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not Deliverable as Addressed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The delivery address is incorrect or doesn\u2019t exist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This can happen due to typos or if the address isn\u2019t verified through CASS (Coding Accuracy Support System).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The post office couldn\u2019t match the address to their database, so the mail was returned.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No Mail Receptacle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The mail carrier couldn\u2019t find a place to leave the mail.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This could be due to a missing or damaged mailbox or an obstruction like overgrown bushes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vacant<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The post office believes the home is unoccupied.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This might happen if the property appears abandoned or mail hasn\u2019t been picked up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If someone recently moved in, they\u2019ll need to notify the post office to update the status.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Attempted<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The carrier tried but couldn\u2019t deliver the mail.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reasons might include construction blocking access or an aggressive dog.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>USPS usually attempts delivery multiple times before returning the mail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insufficient Address<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Required parts of the address are missing (like the street number, ZIP code or apartment number).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Without complete information, the mail can\u2019t be delivered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"waypoint t-sink s-sink\" id=\"not-deliverable-as-addressed\">\n    \n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/smartpresssupport.imgix.net\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/school_DM_Postcards-20201028_102947379.jpeg?auto=format%2Ccompress&fit=crop&h=601&ixlib=php-3.3.0&w=1024&s=ada8d2122ffe2e426835c49c37d556d0\" alt=\"A piece of school direct mail custom printed with a yellow, orange and teal design.\" class=\"wp-image-27939\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smartpresssupport.imgix.net\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/school_DM_Postcards-20201028_102947379.jpeg?auto=format%2Ccompress&amp;fit=crop&amp;h=601&amp;ixlib=php-3.3.0&amp;w=1024&amp;s=ada8d2122ffe2e426835c49c37d556d0 1024w, https:\/\/smartpresssupport.imgix.net\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/school_DM_Postcards-20201028_102947379.jpeg?auto=format%2Ccompress&amp;fit=crop&amp;h=176&amp;ixlib=php-3.3.0&amp;w=300&amp;s=b46ccd053bea280416ee3328955a204d 300w, https:\/\/smartpresssupport.imgix.net\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/school_DM_Postcards-20201028_102947379.jpeg?auto=format%2Ccompress&amp;fit=crop&amp;h=451&amp;ixlib=php-3.3.0&amp;w=768&amp;s=ff6cb143f3ddba39325cdc7de7f7f252 768w, https:\/\/smartpresssupport.imgix.net\/support\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/school_DM_Postcards-20201028_102947379.jpeg?auto=format%2Ccompress&amp;ixlib=php-3.3.0&amp;w=1466&amp;s=77d047aba5aa08d7ed8e2528c885a9cd 1466w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"waypoint t-sink s-sink\" id=\"unable-to-forward\">\n    \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What \u201cUnable to Forward\u201d Means on a Returned Mail Label<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The third line on the label will usually read Unable to Forward. This means that whoever lives at the residence (or used to live there) did not fill out a <a href=\"https:\/\/smartpress.com\/support\/direct-mail\/mailing-lists-ncoa-paf\">National Change of Address (NCOA) form<\/a> with the USPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally, the USPS will look for this, and if the resident has updated their address, a label with the new address will be applied and the piece will be mailed at no extra expense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Smartpress Tip:<\/em><\/strong> It\u2019s important to note that if the label lists Or Current Resident, then the carrier will deliver the piece to that designated address, regardless of the occupant.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"waypoint t-sink s-sink\" id=\"how-to-reduce-return-mail\">\n    \n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Smartpress Works to Reduce Return Mail<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As an online printer that puts the customer first, we do our best to ensure as little mail is returned to the sender as possible. At Smartpress, we take several steps to eliminate any possible issues that may arise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After running a list through CASS, we remove any record with a negative Delivery Point Verification (DVP). You\u2019ll also be given a copy of each record that was removed and a brief explanation why.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With your permission, we also check NCOA ourselves. By doing this, addresses will already be ready to forward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We\u2019ll then see if the post office has any records marked as Vacant ahead of time. We\u2019ll remove these records and include them with the inaccurate records list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depending on your needs, we\u2019ll recommend adding Or Current Resident to addresses.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Smartpress Tip:<\/em><\/strong> Since the USPS doesn\u2019t update their system daily, some removed records may actually be deliverable.
