Lucas tallies their visit count at, \u201cA little less than half.\u201d In addition to travel and camping, his illustration research includes historic National Park imagery.<\/p> <p>&nbsp;<\/p> <p>For example, for the Sequoia National Park illustration on the cover, he recalls that it began with \u201cthat famous black and white picture of a guy in a little VW beetle going through the tree.\u201d He then added three characters hugging another tree nearby. \u201cI haven\u2019t thought about those details in a while,\u201d he laughs. \u201cIt\u2019s a \u2018protect the parks\u2019 kind of message.\u201d<\/p> <!--[\/col]--><\/div> <div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6\"><!--[col]--> <p>Despite the nature-oriented subject matter, Lucas\u2019 workflow is entirely digital. \u201cI sketch everything on an iPad in Procreate and then I bring it into <a href=\"https:\/\/smartpress.com\/support\/file-preparation\/editing-files-with-photoshop-indesign-more\">Adobe Illustrator<\/a>,\u201d he said. There, he adds brushes and texture to finish the piece. \u201cI don&#8217;t do any paper sketches at this point.\u201d<\/p> <p>&nbsp;<\/p> <p>Notable, too, is the minimalist design and typography that take a back seat to the illustrations. The <a href=\"https:\/\/smartpress.com\/support\/printing-basics\/print-fonts\">font<\/a>, Neutra, was one of the first faces he licensed as a designer. \u201cSo I&#8217;ve got a lot of use out of it,\u201d he said.
